Board Member Spotlight: Leeanne Batho – A Lifetime of Community Service
Leeanne Batho’s journey has been intricately woven within the fabric of the Quirindi district, where she has left an indelible mark on its educational and community landscape. Her story is one of dedication, empathy, and a relentless commitment to the well-being of her community.
Leeanne’s roots in Quirindi run deep. After attending Armidale Teachers College, she returned to Quirindi, commencing employment at the newly-established Werris Creek Pre-School.
With over four decades dedicated to primary education, Leeanne’s impact as a teacher, mentor, and leader reverberates through generations of students and families. “I taught all grades from Preschool through to Year 6 and a bit at Quirindi High School,” she recalls, highlighting her versatility and commitment to addressing diverse educational needs.
“I believe that having spent all these years in the district supporting local families and indeed having my own three children grow up here, has enabled me to understand the needs of the local community well,” Leeanne reflects, emphasising her deep connection with the community.
Upon retirement in 2023, Leeanne embarked on a new chapter of service, joining the Quirindi Care Services (QCS) Board. Motivated by personal experiences, including her mother’s residency in a nursing home, she brought her expertise in education, leadership, and community engagement to the forefront.
Leeanne’s contributions to QCS have been multifaceted. As a member of various teams within the organisation, including finance, independent living units, and community advisory groups, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the quality of care provided to elderly residents.
“I believe it is important to value our elderly, provide a safe caring place for those who can no longer live at home or those that need some support,” Leeanne emphasises, underscoring her commitment to the well-being of elderly residents.
One of her notable achievements includes spearheading the formation of the Community Advisory Body (CAB), facilitating direct communication between the community and the QCS Board. “The CAB’s focus is on improvement of service and providing a better life for our residents,” she explains passionately.
Her vision for QCS extends beyond just providing care; Leeanne envisions a nurturing environment where elderly individuals feel valued, respected, and supported. Despite the challenges inherent in the aged care sector, she remains steadfast in her commitment to improving services and advocating for the well-being of residents.
“Building the reputation of QCS continues to be challenging,” Leeanne acknowledges. “We strive to keep the Quirindi community informed of the real situations, including the demanding roles our staff play to provide quality care, the staffing and doctor shortages, and maintaining financial stability for the business.”
Leeanne expresses hope that the positive impact of individuals like QCS General Manager, Kim Riley, her staff, Chair of the QCS Board, Mike Lomax, and other board members will be valued and supported as QCS continues to grow and support the elderly.
Leeanne is a compassionate advocate and a tireless champion for the rights and well-being of the residents of Quirindi. Her journey from the classrooms of local schools to the boardrooms of aged care facilities exemplifies a lifelong commitment to serving others and leaving a legacy of compassion and care.
