The power of connection – intergenerational visits bring laughter and learning

Residents are benefitting from growing relationships with local schools, and the visits are having a positive impact for all involved.

Recently, we warmly welcomed two students from Quirindi High School for their week of work experience. The students spent time with the residents and worked closely with the Lifestyle Team supporting activities.

The pair particularly loved the opportunity to chat with the residents and get to know them. The residents loved it, too. “They had such lovely personalities,” said Laurel. “Nothing was too much trouble for them,” agreed Lynnette.

Lifestyle Co-ordinator, Tyson, said it was lovely to watch the students interact with the residents. “They responded really positively to having the students around and enjoyed their company and conversations,” he said.

On another occasion, a lively group of children from Quirindi Preschool Kindergarten burst into the lounge area, bringing with them all the wonderful energy and curiosity of the younger generation.

There was lots of chatter at the art and craft tables, shrieks of delight and laughter at the games area, and quiet wonder in the story corner. But the best reaction was when the young folk sang some of their favourite songs to their older friends.

Residents remarked on the children’s imagination, honesty and boundless energy. “It was nice watching the little ones play and seeing how busy they were,” says resident, Jim. “We’re looking forward to welcoming the group back soon.”

Manager, Kim, says the relationship with both schools is reaping great benefits for the residents and the younger generation. “The visits result in laughter and learning for all and, in time, should build special intergenerational bonds. It’s so lovely to watch the older students supporting the residents with such care and the animated conversations as the children and residents participate in the activities together,” she says.
