Quirindi Care Services and ACCPA: A Partnership Providing Quality Care and Training in Rural Australia
Attracting and retaining skilled nurses in rural and remote areas is a critical challenge for the aged care sector. With one in four Australians in the aged care demographic residing in these communities, the current nursing shortage poses a significant threat to their access to adequate services. Recognising this, the Aged & Community Care Providers Association (ACCPA) launched the Nursing Transition to Practice Program, aimed at bridging this gap by offering tailored support, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
Addressing the Nursing Shortage
Since its inception in February 2022, the Nursing Transition to Practice Program has been a lifeline for rural and remote aged care providers. The program offers specific training in aged care for newly graduated registered nurses or enrolled nurses in their first two years of work, as well as registered nurses with prior experience who are new to the sector. By supporting these organisations, the program helps overcome barriers to recruitment and retention, building capacity in Australia’s fastest-growing industry.
Amber Ferguson: A Journey To Qualification in Quirindi
Quirindi Care Services, based in regional New South Wales, is a shining example of the program’s success. Situated in the small town of Quirindi, with a population of just over 2,600, the provider has leveraged the Nursing Transition to Practice Program to attract, retain, and upskill its nursing workforce.
Amber Ferguson, a registered nurse at Quirindi Care Services, is a testament to the program’s impact. Initially a member of the care staff, Amber transitioned to a registered nurse role after completing her qualifications while working part-time. Supported by her employer, she received study leave to pursue her Bachelor of Nursing, a crucial step in her career progression.
“My manager and colleagues were understanding and flexible, which contributed to me being able to complete my studies, graduate, and transition to the role of Registered Nurse,” Amber shared. “It is very reassuring that I am supported not only in my workplace but also externally by ACCPA. The weekly professional development sessions deliver information specific to the aged care sector, presented by knowledgeable professionals. The topics covered are very relatable and achievable, making it easy for me to apply the learning in my role.”
Building Confidence and Knowledge

Amber’s journey doesn’t stop here. She plans to further her studies in dementia and palliative care, continuing her learning journey in a challenging but rewarding career.
