Celebrating culture, connection and community
Residents embraced the opportunity to learn, create and celebrate during a vibrant week of activities for NAIDOC Week.
It was an opportunity to honour the rich history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and brought residents together through a range of engaging experiences designed to foster understanding, appreciation and connection.
In the lead up to the celebrations, residents helped create colourful decorations and banners to transform the shared spaces and set the tone for the week ahead. During our regular arts and crafts session, they tried their hand at traditional Aboriginal-inspired dot painting, carefully covering wooden boomerangs with their intricate designs.
In the dining room, a specially curated NAIDOC-themed menu gave residents the chance to enjoy unique flavours, too.
A highlight for many was an outing to the local NAIDOC Fun Day where we explored cultural stalls, viewed community displays and soaked up the atmosphere. It provided a wonderful opportunity for us to engage with the wider community too, while learning more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and traditions.
Resident, Elder Hubert, says he really enjoyed the day. “It was great to get out, have a good time and be part of everything. I’d like to do it again next year.”
Fleur, Lifestyle Officer says, “Enriching activities and outings like these are really important. Our goal is to support residents to continue to discover new things, engage in meaningful conversations and stay connected to the broader community.”
