Meet June Gunning, The Community-Driven Director at Quirindi Care Services
June Gunning brings a wealth of experience and deep-rooted community connections to Quirindi Care Services. While currently residing in Canberra, ACT, June’s ties to Quirindi remain strong. Her background as a physiotherapist and health manager, particularly within ACT Health, has equipped her with the expertise and passion needed to contribute meaningfully to the QCS board.
Growing up on a Hereford stud outside of Quirindi, June was inspired by her parents, both dedicated community volunteers. She pursued a degree in physiotherapy at the University of Sydney and subsequently worked and travelled extensively before settling in Canberra. Despite the distance, she continues to be actively engaged with the Quirindi community.
June’s career in health care has spanned over 30 years, during which she has been at the forefront of auditing, accreditation, and quality improvement processes. Her commitment to enhancing patient care and safety was evident even as a young physiotherapist, when she contributed to the Canberra APA Quality Committee. Her extensive experience in clinical quality assurance makes her a valuable asset to the QCS Board.
“Joining the QCS Board felt like a natural fit for me, given my clinical background and interest in quality improvement. My mother, Hilary, was a resident at Eloura for several years. Prior to that, she was a vibrant member of the Quirindi community, actively volunteering and visiting Eloura residents. My sister, Sue Willis, has also served on the Board, and together, we are committed to giving back to the community that shaped us,” says June.
June’s dedication to Quirindi Care Services is evident in her praise for the organisation’s adaptability in navigating the evolving aged care landscape. “The sector has faced significant challenges in recent years. It’s been rewarding to witness Kim and her team not only meet new regulatory requirements but do so in a way that fosters staff development and enhances resident care. I see this first-hand in the quality of care my mother received.”
Looking ahead, June is encouraged by the increased focus on consumer engagement within the organisation. “The introduction of initiatives like consumer surveys, a Consumer Advisory Body, and community involvement events, such as the Garden Party, reflect our commitment to ensuring residents feel at home, safe, and valued. The board and staff use this feedback to continually improve the services we offer.”
When she’s not attending to her board duties, June enjoys her hobby of photography and seizes every opportunity to capture the beauty of Quirindi during her visits.
